Lake Erie, the fourth largest of the five Great Lakes in North America, forms the boundary between Canada (Ontario) to the north and the United States (Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York) to the west, south, and east. It spans 241 miles (388 km) from west-southwest to east-northeast and has a maximum width of 57 miles. The lake’s principal tributaries include the Detroit, Huron, and Raisin rivers of Michigan; the Maumee, Portage, Sandusky, Cuyahoga, and Grand rivers of Ohio; and the Cattaraugus Creek of New York. Lake Erie discharges through the Niagara River at its eastern end, and its western end features islands, with Pelee Island in Ontario being the largest. Lake Erie plays a vital role in the St. Lawrence Seaway, and its ports facilitate water transportation for industries such as steel production.
