Description
A highly detailed and colored historical world map is presented in a double-hemispherical layout. Decorative elements, including figures in traditional dress and sea monsters, adorn the corners and margins of the map.
A Historical New World Map, Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica ac Hydrographica Tabula auct. Iud. Hondio, is a beutifully colored version of this Copper-engraved map from the Théâtre Géographique Du Royaume de France... published in Paris by Melchior Tavernier in 1636. The map features both hemispheres and provides a glimpse into the geographical understanding of the era. The ecliptic curves on Tavernier's map are reversed so that the line is north of the equator in the western hemisphere and east of south of the equator in the eastern hemisphere. Decoratively, the map is very attractive. The corners contain scenes of the four seasons. Ver or Spring, shows gardeners tending a formal Dutch garden; Aestas or Summer is the time for sheep-shearing; Autumn brings the grape harvest in for wine-pressing; and in Hyems or Winter skaters revel on a frozen lake. On either side of north and south celestial hemispheres are recumbent figures representing the four elements: Terra, Aqua, Ignis and Aer - earth, water, fire and air.

These cartographic maps represent meticulously restored reproductions of original drawings, illustrations, paintings, and engravings. While certain restorations may still exhibit signs of wear and tear due to their age, many have undergone colorizing, color correction, removal of dust, scratches, and smudges, as well as other enhancements so they can be reproduced as exquisite high-quality, high-resolution art prints.
